One Moderna short on Hyperliquid was liquidated for $4.7M in a single minute — then shorted again four minutes later
Moderna's stock perpetual on Hyperliquid (xyz:MRNA) traded $56.1M on Oct 21 — 5.6 times its usual daily volume — and almost all of the day's liquidations came from a single wallet.
At 13:51 UTC, 21 minutes after the Nasdaq open, MRNA jumped from about $246 to $250.22 within one minute, with $5.2M changing hands. In that same minute, wallet 0x4e23…20c3 had its short liquidated: $4.68M at an average of $249.70. That was 98% of the $4.76M in MRNA liquidations that day.
Four minutes later, he shorted again
At 13:55 UTC the same wallet started opening new shorts. By 19:48 UTC it had sold another $10.4M of MRNA at an average of $246.10. Its realized loss on MRNA for the day came to about $577,000.
By this morning the MRNA short is gone (under $100 left). The wallet's largest position now is something else entirely: a $15.6M long in silver.
Why Moderna is moving: a big date on Saturday
Moderna and Merck announced in August that their personalized cancer vaccine, intismeran, combined with Keytruda, met its main goal in a late-stage melanoma trial; CNBC reported that Moderna's stock soared on the news. The detailed numbers have not been released yet.
According to Moderna's announcement, they will be presented at the ESMO Congress in Madrid in the Presidential Symposium on Saturday, Oct 24, at 10:30 a.m. EDT, followed by an investor event at 1:00 p.m. EDT. 24/7 Wall St. reported that the stock jumped 7% on Oct 20 as the data date approached.
What to watch
Saturday's data lands when the Nasdaq is closed. Hyperliquid's MRNA perpetual trades 24/7, so the first reaction will happen there, not on the stock exchange. As of 04:00 UTC, MRNA is at $244.30 with $12.0M of open interest.
