The Tesla whale jumped again: $44.4M of Google at 15x. And Machi survived by less than a dollar
Update, Oct 21 (03:00 UTC): two of today's calls came true within hours.
- ETH, "one wall breaks by Thursday": the short broke. At the US open ETH ran to 2,478, and 0xb15b…dbae was liquidated for $18.4M between 14:06 and 14:15 UTC. Its account is at zero. 0x4b0c closed its ETH short for a $878K loss and went long Bitcoin. Machi survived, and added.
- Tesla whale, "out of Google within 48 hours": it sold all $43.5M of Google between 19:23 and 19:48 UTC at about 338.70, a $919K loss. Then it went long $18.4M of ZEC at 10x and $4.75M of ETH at 25x.
- The $35.1M BTC short at 84,240 closed for a $797K loss before the price got there.
- BTC, HYPE and SOL broke above our ranges. Full scores in the Oct 21 post.
Yesterday in one line: a quiet day for prices, a loud one for a few wallets. BTC slipped 0.2% to 81,914, ETH was flat at 2,407, HYPE rose 0.5% to 79.17 and SOL 0.9% to 105.01. Liquidations came to $25.9M, 93% of them shorts. Over half of that was one ETH short. Open interest on Hyperliquid's main perps: $10.97B, down 0.7%. WLD jumped 9.2% with open interest up a third.
The news outside Hyperliquid
- BTC · Hormuz: Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it hasn't yet used its full ability to close the Strait of Hormuz, and mentioned the undersea cables there and the Suez Canal. BTC touched 83,035 yesterday and didn't hold it. The link is oil: Brent on Hyperliquid went from 97.6 to 106.8 this month (+9%) while BTC fell about 3%. Expensive oil keeps inflation sticky. Still, their 30-day daily correlation is only −0.29, so it's a tendency, not a law. Also this week: Tesla and Meta report on Wednesday, and the Fed meets Oct 27–28 (it's in its quiet period now).
- ETH · Bitmine: per its Oct 19 SEC filing, Tom Lee's Bitmine bought another 12,535 ETH last week. It now holds 6.04M ETH, about 4.9% of supply, roughly 63,500 short of its 5% target.
- HYPE · the team's OTC sale: earlier this month Hyperliquid Labs unstaked 3.75M HYPE (about $330M) and sold it over the counter to an institution it hasn't named. Half has moved, 375,000 to each of five wallets. The other half hasn't. The team says the tokens won't hit the open market. The good news the same week: Kinetiq's Elysium, Hyperliquid's first L2, is set for mainnet on Nov 9, with HYPE as its gas token. That gives HYPE a new use; how much it matters depends on whether anyone uses it. Half of its sequencer fees go to buying back Kinetiq's own KNTQ, not HYPE.
- SOL · Alpenglow: Solana's biggest consensus upgrade is set for mainnet around 14:50 UTC on Oct 21, cutting finality from about 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. Anza says blocks are running faster than planned, so it may come early. Separately, Nasdaq-listed SkyAI has sold all of its 2M+ SOL.
How our first calls did
Yesterday we started a game: a range and a lean for each coin, scored the next day. Here's the score, from our call at 11:30 UTC to 02:40 UTC today.
| Call | What happened | Score |
|---|---|---|
| BTC 80,600–83,200, leaning up | Range held (81,171–82,735). But it drifted down to 81,630. | ½ |
| ETH 2,380–2,450, no lean | High 2,428.7. Low 2,371.8, $8 under our range. | ✗ (by 0.3%) |
| HYPE 76–80.5, slow | 77.52–79.94. | ✓ |
| SOL 100.5–106.2, leaning up | 103.49–105.63, now 104.82, up from 104.57. | ✓ |
| Google perp back below the whale's 345.81 entry | 344.94 now. | ✓ |
3½ out of 5. The ETH miss matters most, because the $8 below our range is exactly where Machi's liquidation line was.
The Tesla whale: sold too early, then jumped again
Recap for anyone new: wallet 0x30af…393e ran the $98M Bitcoin long at 40x that made headlines on Sunday. It sold out 1% from liquidation for a $1.31M loss, then an hour later put $34M into the Tesla perp at 20x.
What happened on Monday:
- 14:02–14:07 UTC, just after the US open, it sold all 96,522 TSLA at 360.58. Together with its DRAM and SOXL longs, the day ended about +$548K.
- Then Tesla kept going. It closed at 368.82. Holding to the close would have been worth about $795K more.
- 14:23 UTC: it started buying the Google perp. For half an hour it was about 60% of all Google volume on Hyperliquid.
What it holds now:
- Google: $44.4M at 15x, isolated, entry 345.87, liquidation 331.02. Down $119K.
- Amazon: $1.23M at 20x, entry 261.34.
Google is at 344.94, under its entry. Same shape as Tesla: the whale's own buying lifted the price, and once the buying stopped, the price eased back.
So far: Bitcoin to Tesla took an hour. Tesla to Google took sixteen.

ETH: caged between two whales
Below: Machi. Machi Big Brother was liquidated on Saturday, bought back within the hour, and on Monday cut his long from 2,350 to 1,600 ETH. That pushed his liquidation line down from 2,395 to 2,371. At 01:09 UTC today, ETH traded at 2,371.8. Less than a dollar away. Now: 1,600 ETH ($3.83M) at 25x, an account of $115K.
Above: 0xb15b. This is the wallet CryptoSlate wrote up last night. 0xb15b…dbae had an ETH short liquidated on Sunday night: $13.1M at around 2,430, 01:08 UTC. It went short again. Now: $16.3M at 25x, entry 2,369.91, liquidation 2,434.92, an account of $600K.
Right behind it: 0x4b0c…b370, $23.9M short at 25x, liquidation 2,450.55.
ETH is at 2,395. Machi's line is 1.0% below. The two short lines are 1.7% and 2.3% above. That's a $64 room, with a 25x whale on each wall.
Who changed sides
- 0xc3ed…00dd, the $41.1M 40x BTC short we said would fuel a break above 83,200, closed all of it yesterday around 81,900, booking about +$61K. That fuel is gone.
- 0x6046…b21d went the other way: now $100.9M of BTC long at 12x (entry 81,993) and $38.1M of ETH long (entry 2,410). Both slightly under water.
- Big trades ($100K+) net-bought $20.3M of BTC and $17.0M of ETH yesterday. HYPE was the most one-sided: +$5.2M, 38% of its big-trade volume.
Our call for today
Same rules: our read, scored tomorrow, right or wrong.
BTC (81,630): range 80,800–82,800, no lean.
- Why: big buyers stepped in yesterday (+$20.3M net), but longs pay to hold (funding +11% a year), and the biggest short that could have been squeezed has left.
- Break above 82,800: 84,240, 0xaeaa…2416's $35.1M 40x short. It's now the single biggest short liquidation within 5%.
- Break below 80,800: 78,970, 0xde6b…3361's $16.3M 40x long. Then 76,445 (0x0c4a…1b19, $25.4M at 40x) and 74,748 (0x36cd…d195, $65.7M at 10x).
ETH (2,395): range 2,371–2,435. We think one of the two walls breaks by Thursday.
- Why: a 25x position on each side, in a 2.7% room. One of them gets forced out first.
- Up through 2,435: 0xb15b, then 0x4b0c at 2,450. $40.2M of shorts within $16.
- Down through 2,371: Machi first (small now). Then very little until 2,202–2,233: 0x77dd…e0e9 and 0x0392…d7d9, $207.8M of longs at 9–10x.
HYPE (78.98): range 76.5–80.5, leaning up.
- Why: the most one-sided big buying of any major yesterday (+38%), and yesterday's range held. Still almost no short liquidations above, so it has to climb on real buying.
- Break above 80.5: 82.5–82.8, last week's highs.
- Break below 76.5: 75.69, 0x13da…08be's $10.2M 10x long. Then 71.65, the $109M whale at 5x, up $55.6M.
SOL (104.82): range 102.5–107, no lean this time.
- Why: yesterday's lean up came from shorts paying to hold. That's over: funding flipped from about −8% to +6.7% a year, and big trades net-sold $1.1M.
- Break above 107: 107.4–108.7, last week's highs.
- Break below 102.5: no big long liquidations until about 94.
The Tesla whale: we think it's out of Google within 48 hours.
- Why: Bitcoin to Tesla took one hour. Tesla to Google took sixteen. Google is under its entry, and most of the buying that lifted it was the whale's own. Tesla reports on Wednesday, and it's no longer in it.
- If it holds Google past Thursday, we're wrong, and we'll say so.
