A $150M 40x BTC long, 1.7% from liquidation, and Machi is back 19 times bigger
Yesterday in one line: a V. BTC rose 0.7% (81,651 → 82,211) after dipping to the low 80,000s in the early-morning cascade, ETH rose 0.9% to 2,441 on a 6.6% range, and HYPE closed at 81.68, back above 80. $201.1M of positions were liquidated, 91% of it longs, almost all in the 02:22 UTC cascade we covered yesterday. Open interest on Hyperliquid's main perps rose 4.2% to $11.60B on $14.02B of taker volume. Trades of $100K or more net-sold $47.5M of BTC and $13.5M of HYPE. STRK jumped 12.7% as its open interest rose 60%.
Then, late in the day, one Hyperliquid whale put $187M on crypto going up.
Yesterday's levels, checked
- The ETH cliff held, and it's still there. 0x0392…d7d9 ($95.4M, liquidation 2,301.5) and 0x77dd…e0e9 ($98.5M, liquidation 2,290.4) haven't moved. ETH is now 6% above them. They're still down $3.3M and $8.1M.
- BTC's 79,415 was never tested. 0x9e2c…5508 closed its $24.5M 25x BTC long anyway. Its only position now is a 10M STRK long.
- The 40x short at 84,195 is gone. 0xa4de…b3c4 closed it and flipped to a $4.9M HYPE long at 10x.
- Machi didn't stay small. Yesterday we wrote that he reopened with 320 ETH. By last night he had 6,100 ETH. More below.
The $150M Hyperliquid whale

Until yesterday afternoon, 0x30af…393e was a stock trader. Its first trade on Hyperliquid was on August 19. Since then it has traded $830M, mostly stock perps: long GOOGL and GME, short CoreWeave (CRWV) and SOXL. All-time, it's up $5.3M.
At 17:00 UTC yesterday, it closed the CoreWeave short for a $1.58M loss.
In the same hour, it bought 1,111 BTC, about $91.5M. By 20:00 UTC:
- 1,822 BTC ($149.5M) at 40x, average entry 82,410, liquidation 80,640 (−1.7%)
- 15,270 ETH ($37.3M) at 25x, average entry 2,455, liquidation 2,406 (−1.6%)
The account behind it holds $5.77M. That's $187M of exposure, about 32 times the money in the account.
Both positions share the same margin. So the two liquidation lines move together: if ETH falls first, the BTC line moves up toward the price, and the other way around. A 1.7% drop in BTC is a normal afternoon. BTC moved 3.6% yesterday.
Headlines say whales are short. The nearest bets say both.
TokenPost reported yesterday that Hyperliquid whale shorts had reached $4.2B, more than the longs. On the tape, big sellers did win the day: $47.5M of net BTC selling.
But look at the bets closest to the price. They're at 40x on both sides.
- 0x4b62…57ca opened $28.3M of BTC shorts yesterday. It now holds $24.1M at 40x, liquidation 83,124 (+1.3%).
- 0xaeaa…2416: $28.7M at 20x, liquidation 85,022 (+3.6%), down $563K.
- 0xc3ed…00dd opened $24.6M at 40x yesterday at 82,013. Liquidation 88,101 (+7.4%).
So BTC is sitting in a 3% box. Down 1.7% and a $150M long gets liquidated. Up 1.3% and a $24M short does. Whichever line breaks first, the forced selling or buying pushes the price toward the next line on that side.
Machi is back, 19 times bigger
0x020c…5872, the wallet tracked as Machi Big Brother's, was liquidated at 02:24 UTC yesterday. Seven minutes later he opened 320 ETH. Then he kept buying, all day, from 2,355 up to 2,461.
He now holds 6,100 ETH ($14.9M) at 25x, average 2,399. He's up $285K. His liquidation is 2,404 (−1.7%).
That's $2 away from the $150M whale's ETH line at 2,406. Together, about $52M of ETH longs liquidate within $2 of each other.
HYPE: why below $80?
AMBCrypto asked why HYPE stayed under $80 after a whale staked $100M. It didn't stay there: HYPE closed yesterday at 81.68. But big takers net-sold $13.5M of HYPE, a third of HYPE's big-trade volume.
Some wallets are moving the other way. 0x13da…08be sold an $18.1M SOL long and bought $10.5M of HYPE at 79.79, 10x, liquidation 75.61. And the largest HYPE long we track, 0x082e…ca88, still holds 1.38M HYPE ($111.9M) at 5x, up $58.5M, liquidation 72.89 (−10.1%).
In our data, HYPE longs held for more than 180 days have won 83% of the time. Shorts held that long won 38%.
