Six minutes of ETH liquidations: Machi wiped out, and the $189M cliff missed by $13.5

Daily · · CryptoAnimon · All posts

Yesterday in one line: a slow bleed. ETH fell 3.1% (2,497 → 2,420) with a 5.4% range, BTC fell 1.8% (83,134 → 81,650), and HYPE slipped 0.9% to 80.79. Open interest across Hyperliquid's main perps dropped 5.0% to $11.13B on $10.57B of taker volume. Trades of $100K or more net-sold $23.6M of ETH and net-bought $5.0M of BTC. $86.3M of positions were liquidated across 8,225 wallets, 98% of it longs. Five of the eight most-liquidated markets were stock perps, not crypto: the single biggest was a $7.3M LITE long.

Then, early today, the ETH liquidation cascade arrived.

Yesterday's question, answered

We had three ETH lines to watch: Machi's 2,474, a $28.8M 12x long at 2,378, and the $208M cliff at 2,289–2,300.

Two of the three were hit. The third held by $13.5.

0x020c…5872, the 25x ETH long widely tracked as Machi Big Brother's, spent yesterday selling into the slide: 5,100 ETH between about 2,483 and 2,408, which pushed his liquidation line down from 2,474 toward 2,380. Today at 02:22 UTC, ETH got there anyway. The remaining 1,650 ETH were liquidated between 02:22 and 02:24. Over two days he closed 7,200 ETH for a realized loss of $627K.

Seven minutes later, he opened a new 25x long. 320 ETH, about $20K of margin, liquidation 2,335.

Six minutes of ETH liquidations

ETH 1-minute candles on Hyperliquid, Oct 15 02:00–04:00 UTC: Machi's 1,650 ETH liquidated at 02:22–02:24, 0xe02e's 1,200 ETH liquidated at 02:28 at the 2,314.4 low, $13.5 above $189M of ETH long liquidations at 2,290–2,301, then a rebound to 2,386 by 02:55

Minute by minute, from 02:21 to 02:28 UTC:

The low stopped $13.5 above 2,300.9, the liquidation price of 0x0392…d7d9's $92.9M ETH long. Right below it, at 2,289.8, sits 0x77dd…e0e9's $96.0M long. Together, $189M of ETH longs that never got triggered.

By 02:55, ETH was back at 2,386. More than two-thirds of the drop came back within half an hour.

What an ETH liquidation hour tells you

A liquidation is a trade nobody chose: the margin runs out and the exchange sells, at any price. That selling pushes the price into the next line, which is how a cascade like this morning's happens. On Hyperliquid, those lines are public before they trigger.

We checked how price behaved around the biggest liquidation hours on Hyperliquid (Jul 27, 2025 to Oct 11, 2026; about 10,600 hours each for BTC and ETH; events at least 24 hours apart):

Top 0.1% liquidation hoursEventsPrice in that hourUp 24h later
ETH, longs liquidated9−2.5%4 of 9
ETH, shorts liquidated9+2.4%4 of 9
BTC, longs liquidated9−1.7%3 of 9
BTC, shorts liquidated8+1.4%4 of 8

In the hour itself, liquidations push the price about 2% in their own direction. A day later the direction is close to a coin flip, and the top 1% of hours (50–60 events per row) show the same thing: 44–52% up after 24 hours. Liquidations are fuel, not a forecast.

History reads the same way. On March 12, 2020, BTC crashed to about 3,800, and that was the bottom. On October 10, 2025, over $19B was liquidated across crypto in one day, the largest on record by CoinGlass's count, and BTC bounced from about 110,000 to 115,000 before sliding to about 82,000 six weeks later. Same kind of crash, different endings.

So the useful part is not "where next". It is who must sell, and at what price. This morning's cascade stopped at the edge of the biggest cluster on the map.

Whale moves

The HYPE whale, while the headlines were about another one. Yesterday's news was a Hyperliquid whale selling $10.7M of HYPE after a 2,200% gain. On the tape, big takers net-sold $4.6M of HYPE, 32% of HYPE's big-trade volume. Two of the sellers we track sold at a loss: 0x9e2c…5508 dumped 52,600 HYPE around 79.9 (−$257K), and 0xe2ad…3c8c sold its HYPE too. The largest HYPE long we track, 0x082e…ca88, did nothing: 1.38M HYPE ($110.5M) at 5x, up $57.2M, liquidation 74.56 (−6.9%).

Yesterday's $20M BTC long is gone. 0xe2ad bought 239 BTC at 83,773 at 25x. Yesterday at 14:40 UTC it sold 227 BTC at 81,804 for −$447K, closed its other positions, and its trading account is now empty. Its liquidation was 13% away. It left anyway.

The cliff wallet bought the crash. 0x0c4a…1b19 added 2,000 ETH at 2,437 yesterday, closed its crude oil short (−$30K), and during this morning's cascade bought 116 BTC at 81,006. It is now long $34.1M of BTC at 40x (liquidation 77,919, −4.5%) and $14.0M of ETH at 25x (liquidation 2,280.7, −4.3%).

The twins are underwater. 0x2371…0883 and 0xbd1c…ff0e, the two wallets that each bought 12,000 ETH in the same minute on Oct 13, went from +$2.1M to −$870K combined. Their liquidation prices, 1,273 and 1,514, are still far away. They haven't moved.
